Hello. I'm Oli. Welcome to Oxford Online English.

In this lesson, you can learn about dealing with shyness or nervousness when you speak English.

大家好,我是奥利,欢迎来到牛津在线英语。

你们通过这节课可以学到在讲英语时如何处理害羞或紧张的情绪。

牛津- 如何克服口语恐惧 How to Feel Less Shy Speaking English

Do you sometimes feel shy when you speak English?

Is it worse when you speak to native speakers?

你在讲英语时是否偶尔会感到害羞呢?

当你与母语为英语的人讲话时这种情况是不是更严重呢?

Do these feelings of shyness or nervousness stop you from practicing and using your English? Yes? Yes? And yes?

这些害羞或紧张的情绪是否阻止了你练习和使用英语呢?

对,对,还是对?

This video could hopefully help you.

Shyness and nervousness are natural, but they also make it more difficult to speak.

这个视频有望能帮到你。

害羞和紧张是正常的,但是这些情绪也会使你更难开口。

If you feel shy, you might not be able to think of things to say, or you might not be able to use grammar and vocabulary correctly.

Some English learners get stuck in a pattern where they feel shy, and so they avoid using English or speaking English.

如果你感到害羞,可能就无法想到什么可说的,或者就不能正确地使用语法和词汇。

一些英语学习者会陷入一种模式,他们因为觉得害羞,便避免用或讲英语。

Now I can't promise to solve all of your problems with shyness and nervousness.

But in this video, I'll share some advice on how to deal with these feelings, which I hope will be helpful.

我无法承诺解决你们在害羞和紧张方面的所有问题。

但是在这个视频中,我将分享一些建议,告诉你们如何处理这些情绪,希望这些建议对你们有用。

Point one, remember that speaking is just speaking.

What do I mean?

第一点:记住讲话就是讲话。

什么意思呢?

Well, when we first hear foreign languages or meet foreigners, they often sound very strange or interesting or exotic to us. "Oh, he's speaking French.

我们第一次听到外国语言或见到外国人时,经常觉得他们很奇怪或有趣或充满异域风情。

“哦,他在说法语。

Wow! He must be saying something romantic, or he must be talking about literature or philosophy. I wish I could understand him."

哇,他在讲的内容一定很浪漫,或者他一定是在谈论文学或哲学。真希望能听懂他讲的话。”

"Oh, wow! She's writing in Chinese. Those characters, they're so beautiful.

“哦,哇!她在写中文。那些方块字太美丽了。

She must be writing a poem. I wish I could understand what she's writing."

她一定是在写一首诗。真希望我能看懂她在写什么。”

Yeah, you know what? Maybe the French guy is talking about philosophy.

Maybe he's just talking about how he got stuck in a traffic jam.

你猜怎么着?或许这个法国人确实是在谈论哲学。

或许他只是在讲他遭遇堵车的情况。

Maybe the Chinese girl is writing a poem about misty mountains, or maybe it's just a shopping list.

If you think that foreign languages and foreign people are something strange or exotic, of course, you'll feel more nervous when you're speaking.

也许这个中国女孩确实在写一首诗描述云雾缭绕的山峰,或者也许那只是一张购物清单而已。

如果你认为外国语言和外国人很奇怪,或充满异国风情,那你在讲那门语言时当然就会感觉更加紧张。

I think many English learners have this idea.

They think, "Oh, I'm not talking to a person.

我认为很多英语学习者都有这种想法。

他们认为:“哦,我不是在和一个普通的人讲话。

I'm talking to a native speaker."

But actually, speaking English isn't something special.

我是在跟一个以英语为母语的人讲话。

”但事实上,讲英语并不是什么特别的事情。

It's just speaking, like you do all day, every day.

All over the world, most of what people talk about is quite simple, and it's quite similar all over the world.

它只是讲话而已,就像你每天所做的那样。

在全世界,人们说的大部分内容都是相当简单的,世界各地大抵都是如此。

Native English speakers aren't different animals.

They're just normal people.

以英语为母语的人并不是什么不一样的动物。

他们只是平常的人。

They talk about their work, they complain about their bosses.

They talk about movies they've seen.

他们谈论自己的工作,抱怨自己的上司。

他们会聊一聊自己看过的电影。

They decide what they're going to have for lunch and so on, just like anybody else.

So don't think that native speakers are some kind of magical animal.

他们决定自己午餐吃什么等等,就和其他所有人一样。

所以不要认为以英语为母语的人就是某种神奇动物。

They're not. If you want to talk to them, talk to them.

他们并不是。如果你想跟他们讲话,那就跟他们讲。

If you don't, don't. It's not such a big deal either way.

如果不想,那就不讲。无论怎样都不是什么大事。

What? Not a big deal? Really? Yeah, really.

什么?不是大事?真的吗?是的,是真的。

You need to ask yourself, part two, "What's the worst that could happen?"

So you feel really nervous about speaking English.

第二点,你需要问问自己:“可能发生的最糟的事情是什么?”

你对讲英语感到非常紧张不安。

One day, you find the courage, you go and talk to a teacher at your school, maybe a British person or an American person, and it goes horribly badly.

You feel really uncomfortable.

有一天,你鼓起勇气,去找你学校的一个老师讲话,他可能是一个英国人或一个美国人,结果相当糟糕。

你觉得非常不自在。

You can't think of anything to say.

So you walk away, and you think thoughts like, "I've embarrassed myself.

想不到任何事情可说。

于是你走开了,内心想着:“我给自己丢人了。

Oh, I feel like an idiot. Oh, why is my English so bad?"

啊,我感觉自己就像个白痴一样。啊,我的英语为什么那么差?”

Here's a question though. What have you actually lost? Nothing.

我要问你一个问题。你真的失去了什么吗?没有。

It's not a big deal, it's just a conversation. The big deal is only in your head.

这没什么大不了的,只是一段对话而已。只是你自己在脑子里把它小题大做了。

You think these thoughts, nobody else.

10 years in the future, are you still going to be thinking and worrying about that time when, "Oh, I tried to start a conversation, and it didn't go very well"?

有这些想法的人是你,他人并没有这么想。

十年以后,你还是会记着并担心那次“哦,我试过开始一段对话,但是进行得并不是很顺利”的事情吗?

No, of course not. Why not?

不,当然不会。为什么不会?

Because it's not that important. Maybe it feels like a big deal.

因为它没有那么重要。也许你感觉那是一件大事。

It feels important at that moment, but it's not really important.

You haven't lost anything.

也许你当下觉得很重要,但是它事实上并不重要。

你什么也没有失去。

You may feel embarrassed, or you may feel stupid, but you're doing that to yourself.

And there's no reason why.

你也许会觉得尴尬,或者觉得自己很蠢,但这都是你在自找烦恼。

而这并没有理由。

No one else is telling you you're stupid.

You aren't risking anything, just by starting a conversation.

其他人谁也没有说你很蠢。

仅仅开始一段对话并不会让你冒着失去任何东西的风险。

I guarantee the person you talk to is not thinking these thoughts.

So what can you do about these feelings?

我保证,与你对话的那个人并没有这些想法。

那么,你能如何处理这些情绪呢?

How can you control them?

Well, let's look at point three: wear a mask.

你如何才能控制它们呢?

我们来看看第三点:戴上面具。

These feelings of nervousness or shyness are all inside.

Here's the best piece of advice I can give you.

这些紧张或害羞的情绪都是内部的情绪。

下面是我能给你的最好的建议。

Just because you feel nervous, you don't have to act nervous.

Let me tell you a story.

仅仅因为你感觉紧张并不代表你非得表现得也很紧张。

我给你讲个故事。

Before I started teaching, I was terrified of public speaking.

Even speaking in front of very small groups made me feel very nervous and very, very stressed.

在我开始教书之前,我怕死了公开演讲。

即使在很小一群人面前讲话都会让我感觉非常紧张,压力非常非常大。

The first lesson I ever taught was to a group of maybe eight Russian teenagers, just a small class.

It was the most scared I've ever been in my life.

我上的第一堂课是教一群,可能八个俄罗斯青少年,只是一个小班。

那是我这辈子感到最害怕的时候。

That's not an exaggeration.

I have quite seriously never felt so much fear.

我不是在夸张。我从没有感到那么害怕过。

I was shaking, I was sweating.

I couldn't remember anything about my lesson.

我当时浑身发抖,不停冒冷汗。

我记不起任何与课程有关的内容。

I tried to teach something about modal verbs.

I don't think anybody learned anything.

我试着教了他们一些关于情态动词的内容。

我不认为他们中有人学到了任何东西。

Afterwards, I thought, "How am I going to do this?"

My trainer gave me the same advice I'm giving you: act confident, even if you don't feel confident.

那之后我想:“我要怎么做?”

我的培训老师给了我一条建议,我现在把同样的建议分享给你们:即使你感觉不自信,也要表现得自信。

So I did.

The first few months, I still felt really nervous, but I tried to hide it.

我照做了。

头几个月里,我还是觉得非常紧张,但是我试着把这种情绪隐藏了起来。

After maybe a year, I didn't feel so nervous.

And after a few years, I could stand in front of 100 people and expect their attention, even if I still felt a little bit nervous inside.

过了大概一年以后,我就没那么紧张了。

几年后,我可以站在100个人面前,请他们注意听我讲话,虽然我内心还是有一点紧张。

If it worked for me, it can work for you.

Sure, it takes time, and it's not easy, but it's possible.

如果这个建议对我来说有用,那对你也会有用的。

当然了,这需要时间而且并不容易,但是有可能实现的。

So act confident, hold your head up, chin up.

Make eye contact, even if it makes you uncomfortable.

所以你要表现得自信些,昂起头,抬起下巴。

进行眼神交流,即使这让你感觉不自在。

Control the speed and the rhythm of your voice.

Doing these things is not so difficult, and it will make you feel good because you're taking control of your feelings, instead of letting your feelings control you.

控制你说话时声音的速度和节奏。

做到这些事情并没有那么困难,而且会让你感觉良好,因为你在控制自己的情绪,而不是让自己的情绪控制了你。

OK, you think, "Easy for you, Oli.

You're talking about speaking your own language.

你可能会想:“奥利,对你来说是简单啊。你所说的是讲你自己的母语。

We're talking about speaking a foreign language." OK, let's talk about that.

而我们说的是讲一门外语。”好了,那我们就来说道说道吧。

Point four: worrying about your language makes your language worse.

Here's a question: when you hear a foreigner speak your language, how do you decide if this person is speaking well or badly?

第四点:担心讲不好会让你讲得更差。

问你一个问题:当你听到一个外国人讲你的语言时,你如何判断对方讲得是好是坏?

In most cases, people notice your fluency and your pronunciation.

In speech, people don't pay much attention to grammar and vocabulary if your speech is easy to understand.

在大多数情况下,人们注意的是你的流利程度和发音。

在口语中,只要你讲的话容易理解,人们就不会太注意语法和词汇。

What does this mean?

It means that if you are embarrassed of your grammar or your vocabulary when you're speaking English, you really shouldn't be.

这是什么意思呢?

意思就是如果你在讲英语时为自己的语法或词汇而感到难堪,那你真的大可不必如此。

First of all, worrying doesn't solve anything anyway.

If your grammar is bad, worrying about your grammar will not make it better.

首先,担心并不能解决任何事情。

如果你语法很差,担心自己的语法也不会让它变得更好。

The only result is that you will feel bad, that's it.

Secondly, other people will really not notice your grammar or vocabulary very much.

唯一的结果就是你会感觉很差,仅此而已。

其次,别人真的不会非常注意你的语法或词汇。

Most people don't care about these things, most people who aren't English teachers.

Even English teachers care about these things at work, and then they stop caring after work.

大多数人都不会在意这些事情,他们大多不是英语老师。

即使是英语老师,他们也只是在工作时会在意这些事情,下班后就不会再在意了。

Trust me, if I've been teaching all day, and you come and talk to me, I do not want to think about your grammar or your vocabulary problems.

That's the last thing I want to do at the end of the day.

相信我,如果我教了一整天的课,你过来跟我讲话时,我不会想去思考你的语法或词汇问题的。

那是我一天结束后最不想做的事情。

Most teachers I know feel the same way.

Most importantly, worrying about your grammar and vocabulary will affect your fluency.

大部分我认识的老师跟我都是一个想法。

最重要的是,担心自己的语法和词汇会影响你的流利度。

You'll speak slowly, and you'll hesitate more if you're always worrying about which verb form should I use or what's the right word here.

So if you're just having a chat with someone, don't think about your English too much.

如果你总是担心自己应该使用哪个动词形式或不知道在这里用哪个词才算对,那你的讲话速度就会很慢,而且犹豫的次数也会更多。

所以如果你只是在和别人聊天,不要太纠结于你的英语。

It doesn't help, it doesn't make your English better, and it doesn't make it easier to communicate.

Just talk, try to communicate your ideas.

这一点帮助都没有,并不会让你的英语变得更好,也不会让沟通变得更加容易。

你就直接说,尽力表达出自己的想法。

You'll sound more confident because you're not hesitating and worrying about your language.

And if you sound more confident, hopefully you'll feel more confident, too.

这样你听起来会更加自信,因为你没有在犹豫和担心自己的语言。

如果你听起来更自信,你可能也会感觉更加自信。

OK, let's review and put the things we've talked about together.

Part five, break the habit sooner, not later.

好了,我们来回顾一下,整理整理我们已经讲过的内容。

第五点:尽早打破习惯。

You can't help feeling shy or nervous, but you can help how you respond to these feelings.

Very often, our responses to our feelings are habits.

感到害羞或紧张虽然由不得你,但是如何对这些情绪做出反应却是由你决定的。

我们对情绪做出的反应通常都是习惯。

They're habits which are difficult to break, but not impossible.

Every time you want to talk to someone in English, but you choose not to, you're feeding your bad habits.

这些习惯虽然很难打破,但并不是不可能。

每次你想要和别人用英语交谈但却选择不这么做时,你就是在助长你的坏习惯。

Every time you think to yourself, "My grammar sucks, I don't have anything interesting to say," you're feeding these bad habits.

So go and talk to someone, even if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

每次你心想:“我的语法太烂了,我没有什么有趣的事情可说”时,你就是在助长这些坏习惯。

所以你要大胆地去找别人交谈,即使这让你觉得不自在。

The first time, it might not go so well, that's okay.

The 10th time, it will be easier.

第一次或许进行得不太顺利,那没关系。

到了第十次时,就会容易些了。

The 100th time, it will be much easier.

You won't even remember how difficult it was at the beginning.

到了第一百次时,就简单多了。

你甚至都想不起来刚开始时有多困难。

You don't have anything interesting to say?

Fine, say something boring.

没有什么有趣的事情可说?

没事,那就讲点无聊的事嘛。

No one expects you to be interesting all the time.

No one's interesting all the time.

没有人指望你永远有趣。

没有人永远都是有趣的。

Just say something boring, end the conversation.

Most conversations are simple.

就说些无聊的事情便结束对话嘛。大部分对话都是很简单的。

It doesn't matter that much what you say.

Worried about your grammar or your vocabulary?

你说了什么并没有那么重要。担心你的语法或词汇?

Remember, no one else really cares that much.

Just focus on trying to communicate, talk, express your ideas.

记住,其他人根本没有那么在意。

只要把注意力集中在交流、讲话、表达自己的想法就行了。

When you're having a conversation with someone, these things are much more important.

Most importantly, stop feeding bad habits.

当你和别人进行对话时,这些事情才更重要得多。

最重要的是停止助长你的坏习惯。

Go talk to people, even if you're uncomfortable.

You'll learn quite quickly that feeling shy or feeling nervous will only stop you speaking English if you let it.

去找别人讲话,即使你感觉不自在。

你很快就会发现,只有当你放任不管时,害羞和紧张这些情绪才会阻止你讲英语。

OK, that's the end of the lesson, I hope you found it useful.

好了,这节课到此就结束了,希望你们觉得有用。

That's all, thank you very much.

See you next time, bye bye!

就这样了,非常感谢你。

下次见,拜拜!
